Why train my dog?
Learning to train your dog is an important investment into their well-being and the quality of your relationship. Here are some reasons why dog training is crucial!
Responsible Pet Ownership
In a densely populated city like Singapore, basic obedience training skills such as sit, stay, recall, leash-walking and settling become essential to ensuring your dog is happy, safe, and doesn’t become a nuisance to others or a source of stress for everyone. Skills such as learning not to bark excessively, being comfortable being left at home alone, and socialising well with humans and dogs are vital to raising an adaptable, confident, and well-behaved companion in multiple situations. A well-behaved dog is more likely to be accepted in public spaces, and have positive interactions with other dogs and people.
Enrichment and Mental Stimulation
As dogs are intelligent creatures that thrive on challenges, dog training activities engages their minds, minimising boredom and destructive behaviours. Training can also encourage problem-solving skills in dogs, equipping them with the ability to adapt better to different situations to become more capable companions.
Bonding with your Dog
Rewards-based dog training enhances communication between you and your dog. It strengthens the bond and creates a mutual understanding, fostering a relationship built on trust and companionship. Positive training can even help you understand your dog’s behaviour better, and allow you to provide the best care for your beloved pup!
Preventing Behaviour Problems
Early dog training and behavioural modification can help serious and persistent behaviour problems from developing. It is important to address issues such as reactivity, aggression, separation anxiety, fear, excessive barking and toilet training as soon as possible, to avoid the need for more training and greater intervention later on.

QiAi is very friendly and informative, understanding of the health challenges and training challenges doggy has faced, and wonderful helping me understand how to work with doggy’s natural instincts. By providing a very systematic worksheet with steps to follow, my family has been working on daily desensitization with doggy to various triggers that cause her to bark when we leave the house, without using treats and totally force free. While we are still a ways from doggy being totally anxiety free, we have seen some progress over the month in her levels of reactivity when family members and I leave the house. It has required us to be very patient, not rush the process, and manage our own expectations as well. Via weekly zoom assessments, QiAi has helped fine tune our training processes, thus empowering us to make better decisions on how fast or slow we need to move. A fantastic positive reinforcement trainer who listens without judgement. Thank you! P.S. photo below is doggy after I left the house recently. Usually she will jump at the door and frantically bark non stop, even with family members at home. Here, she went to quietly sit outside my daughter’s room and waited til my return 45 min later. This was not magic but discipline and hard work on all our parts for one month to help her realise she is safe. We have been training her for 5 years using various other popular methods but nothing has remotely worked until this. Small victories!Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google.Rhianydd Meredith12 May 2024After my dog developed severe separation anxiety, I was put in touch with Pet Coach as they had qualified trainers to help with this difficult behavioural condition. Qiai was absolutely wonderful to work with during the training process. She was methodical and patient, always reassuring me that progress was being made. My dog has shown clear improvement in her anxiety and went from unable to be left alone for 2-3 minutes to now sleeping peacefully for 2 hours while I am away from the apartment. I have been able to continue the training on my own as Qiai provided me with the knowledge and resources as well as the confidence. I highly recommend Pet Coach if you need support with your pet and separation anxiety.Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google.mag guo9 May 2024Qiai and Webster are wonderful trainers who brought furkids for adventure walks around the island and train them in leash walking, helping them in their reactivity towards children, traffic lights and cafe. Qiai also advised us on behaviour modification which made my dog calmer when it goes out for walks and place training. Looking forth to fitness tips from Webster and next behaviour training by Qiai in tackling my dog “s reactivity towards visitors. When I needed help, I always reached out to Qiai who is always so forthcoming in sharing about dog care and we are really grateful for petcoach in advising us when my dog is in heat and assuring us that my dog can be worked on. Really appreciate them taking them out and help them made the world a less stressful place while capturing beautiful moments in photos. Thank you so much Petcoach!Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google.Felicity Ong2 May 2024Having interacted with the kind folks at Petcoach on multiple occasions and events, I can truly say that both Webster and Qiai have a wealth of knowledge as well as depth of experience in tackling various issues that both pets and owners face. I am a proud owner of an (almost) 2 year old mini labradoodle who has mild hip dysplasia and recently engaged their fitness and conditioning services. I personally believe that such strengthening exercises will not only help my dog be in better physical condition, it will also help prevent and avoid injuries which is also particularly important as they age hence the decision to engage them. Throughout the session, Webster would give very clear instructions on what exercises to do and how to execute them after the initial assessment, as well as tips on what to look out for. He was also patient in answering any queries I had during the process and addressing any concerns since my focus was also to strengthen my dog's hind leg to avoid overcompensation on one side. Overall, I would highly recommend Petcoach to any pet owner including my friends and family, as they are certified professionals who are definitely equipped with the right knowledge and expertise - but most importantly you can tell they truly have your pets' welfare in mind!Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google.Pohshen Ng14 April 2024We had a behavior training session with Qiai and it was really good and useful. In one session we were able to gain many useful tips and things that we should work on. We also find that it is extremely helpful that time was taken at the start of the session to understand the dog’s situation before going into the training !Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google.Victoria Neo14 April 2024my 5month shiba (who is a little stubborn girl) got her behaviour assessed by qiai. her initial challenges were: being scared of other dogs (especially big ones) and refusing to walk when we bring her out. qiai did a session and gave us lots of helpful tips and tricks to improve these issues, and she has now grown to a dog that loves socializing and going on walks! qiai also shares other useful tips whenever, 100% recommended!!!!!Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google.Arintha Adelina19 March 2024We engaged Qiai for training our new puppy and it was the best decision for sure! She was a lifesaver - patiently answered all of our questions (even outside training sessions), gave us super helpful tips and recommendations beyond just basic obedience training, and our puppy loves her too! We were struggling before meeting Qiai especially with separation, desensitisation (e.g. with strangers and vacuum cleaner) and frustrating potty accidents, but after just the first session we saw tremendous results. Every session after that we kept learning valuable lessons and we believe our puppy has great foundations now :)Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google.Potato Vera6 March 2024Webster and Qiai are both wonderful humans with a wealth of experience in everything canine-related, from behavioral issues like reactivity and anxiety, to canine fitness, sports, and conditioning. They are both exceedingly helpful, friendly, and highly responsive, often providing training tips and suggestions that go above and beyond my expectations. They are skilled handlers who train with positive reinforcement, and work with me and my anxious and reactive dog to help improve her reactivity and build confidence outdoors. My pup loves them both to bits, and I always feel assured that she's in good hands! Super grateful to have met PetCoach SG - I highly recommend them to anyone. They are professional and compassionate people who really just want what's best for the dog, and do their best to help dogs and their humans live better lives!
FAQs on Dog Training
While learning obedience skills are a significant aspect, dog training goes beyond ‘commands’. It includes skills that encourage socialisation, problem-solving, and adapting to various environments, contributing to a well-rounded and adaptable dog that is comfortable in a big city environment like Singapore.

It’s ideal to start training your dog as early as possible, typically when they are puppies (from 3 months old). However, older dogs benefit greatly from rewards-based training, and it is never too late to establish positive behaviours.
Certified dog trainers provide science-based expertise, ensuring effective and positive training methods. In a world where misinformation and poor advice is readily available on the internet, it is a much safer option to engage a qualified dog trainer to guide you through the correct training methods. Harmful training methods can result in your dog developing behavioural issues which can take even more money and effort to resolve in the long run.

Yes, training is beneficial for all dog breeds. While certain breeds may have specific traits, every dog can benefit from training to establish positive behaviours and strengthen the owner-dog relationship. In addition, it is highly recommended that owners of larger breeds undergo dog training as it will be easier and safer to manage later on. Breeds listed under the Schedule of the AVS/NParks legislation are required by law to undergo obedience training by an AVS-accredited trainer. Dog training for Singapore Specials (stray/rescued dogs) are also highly recommended since they may be prone to behaviour issues such as fear, anxiety and aggression, and will need help learning to live in our busy city environment.
Yes, behaviour modification through training can be effective in addressing problematic behaviours. Professional dog trainers can assess the issues and create a tailored plan to target the issue effectively. Remember, each dog is unique, and the training approach may vary. Seeking professional advice can ensure a customised plan that suits your dog’s individual needs and your specific context.
Training is an ongoing process, and dogs are always learning about the world around them! While basic skills may be learned relatively quickly, reinforcement and consistent training are essential to maintain and build upon these behaviours throughout your dog’s life.
Group training classes involve multiple owners and their dogs in a shared space, whereas private training classes offer one-on-one sessions with a trainer, providing personalised attention and focusing on specific needs and behaviours unique to your dog. Group training is often more affordable but cannot be customised, and may not be suitable for your dog if it is uncomfortable with other dogs and strangers in a confined space.
