Dog Training Singapore
An overview of the dog training industry in SingaporeCLICK TO READ MORE →

Overview

Dog training is a term we hear frequently, but what does it truly entail? In Singapore, the industry for training dogs remains unregulated, allowing anyone to call themselves a dog trainer. This places a significant responsibility on pet owners to find knowledgeable and trustworthy trainers who can meet their dog’s specific needs.

This section aims to help you navigate the dog training landscape in Singapore, so you can identify knowledgeable and trustworthy trainers who match your personal values. With this, you can make confident decisions that support your dog’s well-being and give you peace of mind.

Group vs Private Dog Training

Group Dog Training

Group dog training creates an energetic environment where dogs learn skills and socialise together. This setting builds confidence and well-rounded obedience, focusing on both training and social skills. At our Animal Training Centre (ATC), we offer a controlled space for safe, effective learning and positive social interactions. See a real example of supervised puppy socialisation in action below. If group training matches your goals, our ATC provides a safe, structured space for your dog to thrive.

Private Dog Training

Private training offers personalised attention tailored to your dog’s specific needs. This approach fosters a deeper bond and customised strategies for lasting behaviour improvements. Whether you want to focus on specialised skills like canine fitness or advanced obedience, private training aligns with your unique goals. Watch this impressive static jump by Lexa to see what dedicated private training can achieve. Choosing between group and private training is part of building a training plan that fits your dog’s needs and your goals. Explore the options to make confident, informed decisions for your dog’s success.

Dog Training Types and Goals

Types of Dog Training

  • Sports Training: Includes activities like agility and flyball, focusing on enhancing your dog’s physical abilities and teamwork skills.
  • Fitness Training: Covers strength and conditioning exercises to keep your dog physically fit and healthy.
  • Behaviour Modification: Addresses issues such as aggression, separation anxiety, fears and phobias, and compulsive behaviours.
  • Obedience Training: Also known as Basic Obedience Training or Skills/Manners Training, teaches foundation cues like sit, stay, and recall, often leading to certifications like the Canine Good Citizen award.
  • Puppy Training: Sometimes known as Puppy Kindergarten or Puppy Classes, provides a comprehensive programme including socialisation, toilet training, and resolving common puppy issues such as excitability and mouthing/play-biting. Especially useful for first-time dog owners.
  • Board and Train: A training program where your dog is dropped off in the morning and picked up in the evening. This setup mimics a daycare environment, allowing for intensive training sessions throughout the day.
For any services that take your dog in, including board and train programs, dog boarding, or doggy daycare, it’s crucial to remember that your dog will be under the care of the handlers. Therefore, it’s important to thoroughly review and select handlers who align with your expectations. We recommend consulting our guide on choosing the right dog boarding, doggy daycare, or board and train services to ensure you make an informed choice. The type of training you choose should align with your specific goals, whether it’s through dog training classes, a dog training academy, or dog training schools.

Choosing the Right Path

Ultimately, the decision between group and private training, as well as the specific type of dog training, should align with your goals and your dog’s personality. By understanding what each option offers—whether it’s the social dynamics of group training or the tailored approach of private sessions—you can make an informed choice that sets you and your dog up for success. Both paths aim to enhance your dog’s behaviour and strengthen the bond you share, ensuring a happy and harmonious life together.

Examples of Dog Training Goals

  • Excel at Sport: Enrol in sports training programs to develop agility and teamwork.
  • Be Physically Fit and Healthy: Opt for fitness training to maintain optimal health.
  • Fix an Undesired Behaviour: Behaviour modification programs can address issues like aggression or separation anxiety.
  • Dog Obedience Training: Classes focus on basic skills to enhance overall behaviour.
  • Raising a Puppy: Puppy preparation courses focus on socialisation and foundational training.
  • Train with Minimal Input: Board and train programs offer intensive, hands-off training.
By identifying your goals, you can select the appropriate dog training classes to meet your needs. The next step is finding a suitable service provider, such as a private coach or dog training school.

Dog Training Fundamentals

Before choosing a service provider, understanding the fundamentals of dog training helps you evaluate trainers effectively.

Fundamentals of Dog Training

Dog training generally involves two key steps:
  • Shaping Behaviour: Using positive reinforcement to guide your dog towards desired actions.
  • Reinforcing Behaviour: Using rewards to encourage repetition of good behaviour.
Scientific studies show positive reinforcement is the most effective method. For more details, see our fundamentals of dog training article.

The Effectiveness of Reinforcement in Dog Training

Reinforcement, especially positive reinforcement, is the foundation of effective dog training based on operant conditioning. Certified and accredited trainers use these science-based methods to create a stress-free, optimal learning environment. Positive reinforcement means rewarding your dog immediately after a desired behaviour, such as with treats, praise, or playtime. This encourages repetition and reduces improper reactions. Unlike punishment-based methods, this fosters trust and cooperation, making training more enjoyable. Training your dog in different situations helps ensure consistent behaviour. Positive reinforcement strengthens your bond and helps bring out your dog’s best. Learn more about obedience training step-by-step and classical conditioning. By rewarding positive alternatives and redirecting unwanted actions, trainers effectively guide dogs to better conduct. Check out our guide on eliminating undesirable behaviours to explore reinforcement training further.

The Ineffectiveness of Punishment in Dog Training

Here are a few reasons why punishment is discouraged:
  • Ineffectiveness: Dogs are not in the right state of mind to learn when punished.
  • Limitations: There are limited ways to apply punishment before it becomes counterproductive.
  • Reinforcement of Punisher: Punishment can become reinforcing for the person administering it, leading to overuse.
  • Misuse: It may be used for revenge or to establish dominance and control, rather than as a training tool.
For more details, check out our article on why punishment is an inferior training tool! On the other hand, positive reinforcement has been proven effective, even with marine animals where aversive methods are not viable. When evaluating trainers, ensure their approach aligns with these principles.

Reviewing the Impact of Negative Punishment in Dog Training

Negative punishment is not only ineffective but also detrimental to the training process. Dogs quickly associate negative emotions and stimuli with training sessions, leading to undesired behaviours and a breakdown in the pet-owner relationship. This association is rooted in classical conditioning, where dogs link neutral stimuli with negative experiences. Over time, this can cause anxiety, fear, or aggression. Few trainers fully address this, even in training academies. For a deeper dive, see our article on classical conditioning. Certified professional dog trainers and behaviour consultants often focus on preventing dog aggression through understanding this process. Understanding this highlights why dog owners should avoid negative punishment. Positive reinforcement not only improves learning but creates a positive experience for your dog. By adopting humane methods, you foster better behaviour and strengthen your bond with your furry companion.

Picking a Trainer That Fits You

What to Look Out for Before Engaging a Professional Dog Training Service

Choosing a professional dog trainer is like selecting a marriage counsellor for you and your dog. It’s essential to find someone who aligns with your values and understands both you and your pet.

Key Considerations

  • Experience and Knowledge: The trainer should have practical experience applying dog training techniques and a deep understanding of dog learning mechanisms.
  • First Consultation: A credible trainer will assess your dog before recommending a training package.
  • Contextual Understanding: The trainer should ask about your home environment, other pets, and family members, as dog behaviours don’t develop in isolation.

Evaluating Google Reviews: What to Look For

Reviews provide insights into a trainer’s experience and effectiveness but can sometimes mislead, especially if reviewers lack understanding of dog behaviour. When evaluating reviews, consider how the training methods impact your dog’s well-being and happiness, not just star ratings.
  • Initial Success: Some trainers may show short-term success using fear or intimidation, leading to unsustainable results and behavioural regression.
  • Lack of Knowledge: Pet owners may judge trainers on surface-level obedience, missing long-term behaviour improvements.
  • Emotional Attachment: Clients may overlook negatives due to bonds with trainers or appreciation for their efforts.
  • Misinterpretation of Behaviours: Obedience due to fear can be mistaken for understanding by clients.

Red Flags Indicating Ineffective Methods

Be cautious if you see these phrases in reviews:
  • “Control of your dog” – May suggest dominance over positive reinforcement.
  • “Looks harsh, but it works” – Could indicate intimidation or physical corrections.
  • “Effective methods” without specifics – Vague claims needing further clarity.
For more details, check out our article on why punishment is not optimal as a training tool.

Green Lights to Look Out For

Positive indicators that the training service prioritises your dog’s well-being and development include:
  • Owner Education Focus: Trainers who educate owners to be effective handlers, not just manage dog behaviour.
  • Understanding and Growth: Testimonials showing how owners grew in understanding their dogs.
  • Outcome-Oriented Approach: Trainers who foster collaborative relationships and develop owner skills for long-term success.
Keeping these points in mind will help you choose a trainer who supports your journey to a harmonious relationship with your dog.

Standards You Should Expect

A professional dog trainer should offer tailored services specific to your dog’s needs, especially for complex issues like separation anxiety or canine fitness.
Essential Services
  • Tailored Dog Training Plans: Customised to address your dog’s specific challenges and goals.
  • First Consultation: An initial assessment to understand your dog’s behaviour and your training objectives.
  • Contextual Enquiries: Questions about your dog’s living conditions and background.
  • Coaching for Owners: The trainer should teach you how to train your dog, breaking down complex concepts into understandable steps.
If you encounter issues with your dog, our behaviour consultants are always here to help.

Questions to Ask Your Dog Trainer

  • Living Conditions: What do they need to know about your dog’s living environment and family members? Response: It’s crucial to identify the dog’s primary caregivers first. Are all the key players in agreement on setting consistent rules to avoid confusing the pup?
  • Positive Reinforcement: What do they do when the dog displays the correct behaviour? Response: The trainer should reinforce good behaviour immediately with rewards like treats or toys to strengthen learning.
  • Handling Mistakes: What is their approach when the dog does something wrong? Response: Avoid both rewarding and punishing the undesired behaviour. Focus instead on shaping the desired behaviour and reinforcing it when it appears.
  • Aversive Stimuli: Do they use any aversive methods? Response: The use of aversive methods should be rare, temporary, and well-justified. Trainers should clearly explain how they plan to transition away from aversives and return to positive reinforcement.
  • Explanation of Steps: Can they explain their training methods and rationale? Response: A professional trainer should guide you through each step, making sure you understand and can replicate the process yourself.

Key Takeaways

  • Handling Mistakes: Undesired behaviours shouldn’t be punished. Trainers should wait for and reinforce the correct behaviour.
  • Aversive Stimuli: If used, they must be carefully explained and phased out quickly, with a strong focus on reinforcing desired behaviours.
  • Explanation of Steps: Trainers should communicate clearly so that you can effectively reinforce behaviours at home.
By asking these questions and evaluating the answers, you’ll be better equipped to choose a trainer who applies humane, science-backed training techniques that strengthen your bond with your dog.

How to become a Dog Trainer

Becoming a Professional Dog Trainer

For those interested in becoming dog trainers, the journey involves gaining practical experience, understanding canine behaviour, and often obtaining certifications from recognised institutions. To gain credentials, aspiring dog trainers should start by studying the theory behind canine behavior, including topics such as learning theory, animal behavioural sciences, and a variety of rewards-based training methods. Credentials from reputed organisations provide a solid foundation and are highly regarded in the industry. Important certifications include:
  • The International Association of Animal Behavior Consultants (IAABC)
  • Certified Separation Anxiety Trainer (CSAT)
  • Certification Council for Professional Dog Trainers (CCPDT)
  • Masters Degree in Behavioural Sciences
  • Karen Pryor Training Academy
  • Certified Professional Canine Fitness Trainer (CPCFT)
These certifications ensure a combination of theoretical knowledge and practical experience by requiring practical case studies, video demonstrations of training approaches, and other hands-on applications. Without these components, the certification will not be awarded. Hands-on experience is crucial for becoming adept at dog training, whether working with individual pets or in group sessions. Engaging with knowledgeable certified dog trainers through internships or mentorship programs provides invaluable insights and guidance, allowing new trainers to refine their skills under expert supervision. Additionally, continuous education is a must, as the field constantly evolves with new techniques and understanding of canine behaviour. Attending seminars, workshops, and engaging in discussions with fellow trainers ensure professionals stay up-to-date with the latest advancements and maintain high standards in their practice. Why Train your Dog

At Pet Coach SG, we believe that well-trained dogs live fuller, richer lives. When your dog has a solid foundation, they can do more — safely, confidently, and happily.
  • Walk freely in front on your daily strolls, knowing they’ll come back when called.
  • Run loose and enjoy dog parks with confidence, because recall is reliable.
  • Jump through challenging obstacles with strength and balance, thanks to a strong fitness foundation.
  • Visit the vet with ease, supported by targeting and stationing behaviours that ease their fears.
Training foundational behaviours isn’t a cure-all for issues like reactivity, but it builds the essential skills and mindset your dog needs. It creates a practical, manageable base — setting both you and your dog up for success in everything that comes next.

How to Utilise Toy Drive

Every dog is driven by different motivators — whether it’s food, play, or praise. By identifying what excites your dog the most, you can use it as a powerful tool to reinforce good behavior. Tips for Using Toy Drive Effectively:
  • Be clear with your dog on what you want — use simple cues like leave it, take it, or drop it.
  • Build these foundational behaviors gradually, starting with treats to help your dog understand the commands.
  • Once your dog reliably follows these cues, reinforce them consistently with the toy.
  • Avoid rewarding incorrect behavior — maintaining clear structure is crucial when working with your dog’s high emotional arousal during play.
Using toy drive with clear rules and consistent reinforcement helps your dog focus, learn better, and keeps training positive and effective.

Stay Training Progression

  1. Start your training by asking your dog to stay for short durations.
  2. Gradually increase the duration of the stay before adding distance.
  3. Once your dog is comfortable, begin stepping away slowly to increase distance.
  4. Always watch for signs your dog is nearing their threshold to avoid frustration.
  5. Release your dog with a clear cue and reward their success to reinforce positive behavior.
  6. Consistent practice builds reliability and confidence in your dog’s stay.
For more details check out our detailed article on training and shaping the stay here.

Fitness & Injury Prevention

Watch our happy dogs at the Animal Training Centre engaging in fun and effective fitness activities designed to keep them healthy, strong, and injury-free! Regular fitness sessions help maintain strong muscles and bone density, which are essential for your dog’s long-term mobility and quality of life. Physical fitness in dogs not only boosts their energy and confidence but also helps prevent common injuries such as ligament strains (including ACL tears), joint problems like arthritis, and muscle atrophy. By strengthening muscles around joints, fitness exercises reduce stress on vulnerable areas and promote better overall body control. At Pet Coach SG, we believe fitness is key to a balanced, happy, and resilient dog. Join us and give your dog the gift of health and vitality!

Precision Heel Pivot

Shaping the Heel Position with Target Pivots Coach Webster uses a stool to help the dog understand where the “heel” position is — tight and aligned to the left side. With the stool acting as a clear physical target, your dog can build reliable positioning with confidence and precision.
  • Start by luring your dog onto the correct heel spot beside you using the stool as a guide.
  • Reward when they hit the correct position — consistency builds clarity.
  • Begin pivoting in small movements; mark and reward your dog for staying in position as you turn.
  • Gradually increase the movement and remove the target once your dog reliably follows the heel.
This is a powerful skill to have in real-world scenarios, especially when you need your dog under control quickly. Plus, it’s mentally and physically enriching!

The Perfect Stack

Mastering the Neutral Stack: Building Strong Foundations The neutral stack is one of the most important foundations in canine fitness and body awareness.
  • Forelegs straight and perpendicular to the ground
  • Back hocks aligned, vertical, and stable
  • Backline level and strong
  • Head in a calm, neutral position
At Pet Coach SG, we guide dogs into this posture using front and rear targets. This controlled setup helps develop core strength and postural awareness — vital for fitness and injury prevention. It may look simple, but a good stack is the beginning of better movement, balance, and lifelong strength.

Pro Tip for Down-Stands

Getting your dog’s body movement right makes all the difference in training — and it’s often the little things that count. In this quick tip, we refine two essential postures:
  • Fold-back down: Instead of luring straight down, guide the treat diagonally towards your dog’s chest and down — this better matches their natural motion and encourages a true fold-back down.
  • Push-forward stand: Rather than luring straight up, push the treat slightly forward and upward. This helps your dog stand smoothly by shifting their weight naturally.
These subtle angles make your cues clearer, reduce confusion, and allow your dog to perform with better form — consistently. At Pet Coach SG, we care about these details. Because better communication means faster progress, less frustration, and a stronger bond.

Training Backup Stands

Backing up onto a platform is a fantastic way to build body awareness, confidence, and functional control — especially for dogs working on hind-end strength and coordination. Here’s how to train it step by step:
  1. Start with Positive Association: Place the platform in a quiet, familiar space. Let your dog investigate it. Mark and reward any engagement (looking, sniffing, stepping near).
  2. Establish Comfort: Reward your dog for standing near or placing their back feet on the ground while front feet are off the platform. This helps set a clear boundary.
  3. Shape the Movement: Wait for your dog to offer motion with the forelegs toward the platform. If they shift forward or lift one paw — click and treat!
  4. Troubleshoot When Needed: If your dog is stuck:
    • Try gently stepping into their space to create movement.
    • Use a food lure to guide the front paws onto the platform.
    • Break it into smaller steps based on your dog’s current skill level.
  5. Mark and Reward: Every time your dog makes progress, mark it (with a click or “yes!”) and reward immediately. Keep the energy fun and light.
This is a highly transferable skill that improves your dog’s coordination, focus, and understanding of body cues. Take your time, celebrate progress, and enjoy the training journey together!

Why train my dog?

Learning to train your dog is an important investment into their well-being and the quality of your relationship. Here are some reasons why dog training is crucial!

Responsible Pet Ownership

In a densely populated city like Singapore, basic obedience training skills such as sit, stay, recall, leash-walking and settling become essential to ensuring your dog is happy, safe, and doesn’t become a nuisance to others or a source of stress for everyone. Skills such as learning not to bark excessively, being comfortable being left at home alone, and socialising well with humans and dogs are vital to raising an adaptable, confident, and well-behaved companion in multiple situations. A well-behaved dog is more likely to be accepted in public spaces, and have positive interactions with other dogs and people.

Enrichment and Mental Stimulation

As dogs are intelligent creatures that thrive on challenges, dog training activities engages their minds, minimising boredom and destructive behaviours. Training can also encourage problem-solving skills in dogs, equipping them with the ability to adapt better to different situations to become more capable companions.

Bonding with your Dog

Rewards-based dog training enhances communication between you and your dog. It strengthens the bond and creates a mutual understanding, fostering a relationship built on trust and companionship. Positive training can even help you understand your dog’s behaviour better, and allow you to provide the best care for your beloved pup!

Preventing Behaviour Problems

Early dog training and behavioural modification can help serious and persistent behaviour problems from developing. It is important to address issues such as reactivity, aggression, separation anxiety, fear, excessive barking and toilet training as soon as possible, to avoid the need for more training and greater intervention later on.

We're with you!

We are committed to a safe and collaborative environment to benefit pets and people alike! We focus on implementing a rewards-based approach to address behavioural concerns in a gentle and ethical way. No fear, force or rough handling included 🙂

FAQs on Dog Training

Our dog training facility in Singapore offers a range of services, including personalized day training, behavior modification, puppy training, and fitness programs. For those who prefer a hands-off approach, our day training program is a great alternative to board and train. Owners can leave their dogs with us for 8 sessions, with the last session dedicated to skills transfer. This ensures that owners are equipped with the necessary skill set to continue progressing with their dog at home, leading to lasting results in obedience, behavior, and overall well-being.

The best age to start puppy training in Singapore is typically around 8 to 12 weeks, when puppies are most receptive to learning. Our puppy training classes focus on essential skills such as socialization, obedience, and potty training, ensuring your puppy gets off to a great start.

Yes, our day training program is an excellent alternative to dog daycare, especially for dogs dealing with separation anxiety, which can be quite complex. Our certified trainers use proven methods to help dogs build confidence, reduce anxiety, and adapt to being away from their owners.

For more comprehensive support, we recommend our Separation Anxiety Training Guide and considering the option to engage a CSAT specialist to treat separation anxiety.

The cost of dog training in Singapore can vary widely due to the absence of standardized regulations, typically ranging from $50 to $1,000. Our breakdown is based on an analysis of the dog training industry worldwide, with common training costs including:

At our facility, our day training costs $90 per session or $150 per session with additional enrichment. Each program includes a skills transfer session at the end, equipping you with the tools to continue your dog’s progress at home.

The number of training sessions varies for each dog based on factors such as age, temperament, and specific learning goals. For basic obedience, dogs typically benefit from a series of 6 to 8 sessions, while behavior modification may require additional time.

Our dog training school in Singapore packages day training in sessions of 8, which provides sufficient time for dogs to establish foundational skills. This allows us to effectively transfer the skillset to owners, empowering them to continue progressing to more difficult skills with their dogs.

Check out our dog training school guide to equip yourself with the information required to make the best decision for your dog.

The first thing to train your puppy is basic commands like sit, stay, and come (which is actually recall), along with potty training. Our puppy training in Singapore focuses on foundational skills, setting your puppy up for success in more advanced training down the road.

Potty training requires consistency and patience. First, choose whether to train your dog indoors or outdoors. We recommend establishing a routine and rewarding your dog for going in the correct spot. Remember, don’t punish your dog for accidents; this is counterproductive and may lead them to pee behind your back, making it harder to modify the behavior later. When accidents happen, be sure to remove any scent to prevent repeat incidents.

Our dog training facility in Singapore offers personalized guidance to help you navigate this process smoothly. For further details, check out our potty training guide.
